Passion Project Semester II Update

So far, what we have achieved is mainly intangible. Beepul and I have spent a long time watching and researching short films and different script writing techniques. Starting this Friday, we plan on writing the actual script for our film. Obstacles we expect is when and where are we going to film the movie to present for the class. We both have a lot of stuff to do after school so it is important for us to coordinate with each other and our actors. What we still need to do is write the full script and film the short film with our actors. Along with this, we also need to spend a long time editing the movie because we really want it to turn out well. Other than this, we have nothing else to accomplish other then finding actors, though we already have some in mind.

Passion Project Updates & Reflections

So far, I have completed about twenty percent of my passion project along with Sai. I have done a lot of research on optical illusions and have tried many of them on my own. We plan on showing at least ten or so illusions. I have picked a good five illusions that we would like to use for our project. What I need to do is start writing down research for our PowerPoint presentation. Me and Sai need to divy up the work accordingly as well as the certain parts which we would like to do together. The obstacles I have face in the past eight weeks is procrastination. I should use the passion project days better than I had used them for the past eight weeks. In the future I plan on working at home and using the passion project days more efficiently.

Steve Jobs: A True Outlier

When you hear of a programmer what do you think? Most people imagine a man hunched over a desk with glasses typing mindless lines of uniform code. Many believe that writing a program requires more analytic thinking than creative thinking. However, perhaps the biggest outlier in history was one to shatter the boundaries of what programming was thought to be. Steve Jobs revolutionized the computer technical industry. He made it practical to have home computers at a time when this was difficult to even fathom. Who knows? Without him I might not be typing these words down write now on a computer and certainly not on the Macbook Pro i'm using. This visionary, legend, and quite frankly, a BOSS is truly one of the most significant outliers in history.

Born on February 24, 1955 to an unwed grad student named Joanne Simpson and to a Native Syrian named Abdulfattah John Jandali. In an america where babies born out of marriage were taboo,  Jobs was put up for adoption. He was eventually adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs, a middle class couple settled in the Bay Area. Steve was a very turbulent child up until the 4th grade where his teacher would "bribe me into learning with five dollar bills and candy". He became so hooked to school, he would skip 5th grade and go straight to middle school. He was bullied at a young age encouraging them to move to Los Altos so Jobs could attend Cupertino Junior High. During this time was the birth of the silicon valley which was important to Jobs because as Malcolm Gladwell said, sometimes an outlier has to be born at a certain time to end up being successful. The silicon valley was upcoming when Steve founded Apple, giving him an edge on the industry. We're getting ahead of ourselves though, let's dive back into the story. As Steve was growing up in Los Altos, he became increasingly curious with the world of electronics, tinkering and discovering in his parent's garage. When steve was  in high school, he enrolled in the popular electronics class. Steve got spare parts from HP and even managed to work for a small amount of time in their factories. His practical intelligence was shown in situation, which is part of the Triarchic Theory of intelligence from Outliers. He would meet Bill Hernandez, also his neighbor in his electronics class. Bill eventually introduced Stve to Steve Wozniack, or Woz for short. Woz would later prove to be a vital part of the creation of Apple as well as one of Steve's closest friends. Woz, Steve, and Bill would build a computer board in their free time which they called "the cream soda computer board".

Steve would attend Reed college, a private liberal arts school up in Oregon. However he left Reed after only a few months of attending. After this, Steve went through a period of experimenting with Eastern mysticism and LSD trips. After a small dark period, Steve travelled to India to rediscover himself as well as reevaluate his life. When Steve came back, him and Woz began building their own line of computer boards which they sold to local electronic store. Realizing the opportunity in this upcoming field, he would found Apple Computers. In the early days, the company was a force to be reckoned with. However the board of directors would eventually fire Steve as they believed his presence was harmful for the company. However he proved them wrong, opening up another tech company named Next which would be bought back by Apple and led to him being reinstated as CEO. He would come back with a vengence growing apple into the powerhouse it is today. However, he died due to pancreatic cancer on October 5, 2011.

The main reason i believe that Steve jobs is an outlier is because he seized the opportunities he was given and was intelligent in all of definitions according to the Triarchic Theory of intelligence. He was an opportunist and achieved success not just because of his IQ and school smarts. He saw the opportunity of an rapidly growing field and risked his whole life by creating Apple Computers. Even as a young boy, he seized the opportunity  to work at an HP factory and gain valuable experience at Atari Video Games. The man basically knows what he wants and when and where to take it. We see the idea of opportunity in Outliers. Chris Langan is a genius, but was not given or didn't take the right opportunities to be successful. Steve Jobs He also is an extremely intelligent person. But he wasn't just analytically intelligent, as he could write lines of code to program. He was also creatively intelligent as he was a visionary and could see what he wanted for himself and his company before it even happened. His ability to think outside the box also shows is adept creativity. He is also an amazing entrepreneur, displaying his practical intelligence. A very good example of this was his ability to get sought out people to help run his company. When he was owner of Apple he was able to sign John Sculley, the president of PepsiCo. His practical intelligence and witty humor is evident when he asked Sculley whether "you want to be selling sugar water for the rest of your life, or if you want to do something truly great". For thes reasons, Steve Jobs is the most famous outlier in history who put the world in our palms with his inventions and ideas. His legacy will live on in every iPhone and iPad ever made and ever will be made.

Kickstarter

Kickstarter is a website where people can fund different creative ideas ranging from video games and ideas about food. People can pledge a certain amount of money toward a project of their choice and it will eventually be funded completely and created. The cool part is that the pledger always something back after the project they funded is complete.

I have decided to fund $50 to Zombie Playground. Zombie playground is a post apocalyptic zombie game that takes place in a school. In the game you are a child who has to fend of the undead. I chose it because I like to play zombie games. My reward for funding will be getting a collectors edition of the game when it comes out plus a digital artbook. I have also decided to also fund $220 the already successful Remee which is a REM enhancing Lucid dreaming mask. It works by flashing lights during REM stages of sleep alerting the sleeper allowing him to control his or her dream. I will recieve a custom remee and a standard remee for my donation. The final project is the limb.al. I will donate $230 for this project. It is a micro usb port that turns your phone into a useful device in work or in the car. The limb.al is a cord that can connect to usb ports and it holds it up so you can multitask. It can even allow windows on your computer to come onto your phone just by dragging it. You can get live feeds form social networking, live blog feeds, stream movies live or even listen to music. With my donation I receive a pre-production limb.al because of my donation. As you can see, Kickstarter offers a variety of creative ideas that you can fund to make the world a better place

Twitter

The 2011 egyptian revolution was a major milestone in history and a large part of the Arab spring. It involved the overthrow the regime of Hosni Mubarak who was the president. People from all different socio-economic backrounds stood up in the many protests. At first the regime seemed almost impossible, but on February 11 2011, Hosni Mubarack officially resigned from power. The aftermath is the soon vote for the new president of Egypt.

Twitter had a large part in the event mainly by helping organize the event. The protesters posted times and dates for protests which was a big reason why most protests were so successful. Because of this new tool in revolutions, this was called "Revolution 2.0". This implies how this revolution is a new version of any other of its kind. The protesters also created hash tags so others can know that they are not alone. This gave them a voice and a greater sense of unity. This is why Twitter was very important in the egyptian revolution.

Crowdsourcing

An example of crowdsourcing is Angies List. Angies List is a website where people share reviews of different services such as babysiters or lawnmowers. To read and write reviews you need to buy a membership from Angies List. Tis information exchange is what makes it crowdsouring.

Another example of crowdsourcing is iStockPhotos. iStockPhotos is a website where people upload pictures and other people are able to buy these pictures. The buyers get the photo for cheap and the uploaders receive a small profit. This photo exchange is what makes this crowdsourcing.
